One life. One perspective.

The community he remembers

These are Charles’s memories, seen through his eyes. Others who lived through those same years may remember different things. Here, he offers what he witnessed, experienced, and carried with him.

He remembers segregation and secondhand schoolbooks, alongside the intelligence, resourcefulness, and respect within his community. There was a Black doctor, a lawyer, and other professionals. People lived different lives, shared what they knew, and helped care for one another. The demeaning labels placed on Black people did not describe the people he knew.

And there was joy: conversation across the yard, card games, food cooking, and children waiting for fried pork skins or snacking on boiled and roasted peanuts.

Everyone had a part

Worth every turn.

The women prepared the custard. Little boys took the early turns. As the ice cream grew stiff, strong teenagers took over the hard cranking while another teenager or a man held the raised churn steady.

Ice and rock salt surrounded the canister. Burlap covered the extra ice. The younger children waited for the churning to stop—and their chance to taste the ice cream left on the paddles.
